Hi guys,

my guinea has found a nice spot to nest, but we have had a few fox incidents with our guinea fowls and chickens.

The guinea has started to stay on the nest through the night and I just wanted to see if anyone had any tricks or tips on protecting to nest from predators whilst she’s there as I don’t want her to get eaten nor have the eggs taken; as well I don’t want to disturb her and have her nest somewhere else as I have only just been able to find this nest after 2 months since the last nest where the crows stole all the eggs. Hah

might be a silly question but I just wanted to know if there is anyway to protect the nest a bit more as well as keeping her safe

thanks

I’ve made our guineas nest in the coop, which has produced all sorts of troubles, but avoided predation of the hen on outdoor nests. I think that some posters in BYCs have mentioned some methods like making a cage around the nest for night time, but I haven’t tried that. You could also remove the eggs and incubate yourself.

I believe that @red horse ranch tried putting the nest inside a dog carrier and would close it in the evening.

I simply will not allow my guinea hens to spend the night on a hidden nest. I chase them off of the nest in the evening and shut them inside their secure coop. I remove the real eggs and leave the fake eggs.

This hen has made a nest close to the woods and is on 18th day. We never lost a hen from predators. But that depends on the coast where you live.
The are many night predators that can take your guinea hen for supper. A cage around her would be better, at least, for her to survive great evenings. Put the cage during nightfall, guineas really hate being disturbed, they are very private about their nesting grounds.

Best wishes ✨ 🌻
