Guinea hen

So I went out to the coop and found a guinea in my nesting box but I didn't think they layed eggs till spring I'm new to guineas.I'm pretty sure it's a hen .

It's very common for a young hen to lay her first egg anytime from mid-winter to mid-spring. Usually, the following year, that same hen will start up laying again a little later than she did when she laid her first egg. I don't know why it happens that way. You might find that your hen is only "practicing" laying and won't really lay her first egg for a couple/few more weeks. I love that she's using a nesting box. My guineas never did learn to lay inside our chickens' nesting boxes. They always laid their eggs on the floor underneath the boxes that were built for the chickens.

I read they don't use nesting boxes much and I never seen one In it till that morning and was suprised and excited lol

The thing about guineas to tell if they are male or female is right below their cheeks they have flaps of skin. If the flap is down or even looks more like a cup it is a boy, but if you have a guinea with flaps that go straight back it is a girl. They also make different noises, the girl makes a noise like buck-wheat, buck-wheat. On the other hand the males cannot do that and just make that really really loud noise. Hope this works.

I have had Guineas for Several years and I will be darned if I could EVER determine a male vs a female guinea fowl by how they look.
I have spent many an hour in an enclosed area watching my guineas and waiting for them to call.
Then I try to catch the one i think did the Buck-wheat and band the thing.
I then wait some more for that same banded bird to call.
Some times I do not get the correct bird.
I have noticed that Guinea Hens in a Hatch out are about 45 percent vs 55 percent for the boys.
BTW it is really unusual for a Guinea to use a laying box.

Your right. My guineas also would prefer to lay when they are roming free hidden in the grass where it is very difficult to find. Thanks
