I stumbled across an article "California’s Giant Guinea Pigs and the Cuys Criollos Mejorados" At four to eight pounds that would fit the bill when it comes to meat production. The GPs were being sold as pets, but the meet breed proved to be skittish, stronger and harder to tame than the pet variety of guinea pigs. They apparently also can jump out of uncovered cages.
I know myself too well to try to give up meat all together, but I also want to respect the lives of the animals I eat. I want them to have a good life before it ends. I can't raise goats or cows for milk. (Allergies) I can't raise sheep for milk or meat or wool. (again allergies) I can't raise rabbits. (allergies) A pig is more meat than I need. I plan to raise fish, ducks, chickens and now I think I will try cuys/guinea pigs. I'm not allergic to them, which surprised me. I'm allergic to all other furry animals. (Very sad, I wanted to grow up to be a veterinarian)
