Hello, i posted a while ago about my guinea with an over filled crop. Thank you everyone who tried to help. We are on the mend finally.
Turns out she had sour crop. I did give molasses which in rare cases can cause chickens crop to burst. My guinea was one of the rare cases. She needed stitches and dermabond (not super glue or vet bond). I kept her in a clean environment (small plastic crate with cardboard [change frequently] on top of a heating pad. I had to use cardboard (or thick paper bag )because she ate everything else. She also had supplemental oxygen to promote healing.
Since her crop has been fixed we both have been battling the sour crop which I’m sure the antibiotics needed did not help. We used monistat which also did not work. I ended up doing some research and found that oregano and a few other herbs help.
I stopped giving monistat after 7th day mark. I did 1 drop pure oregano oil with 5drops of cod liver oil. I gave 1 drop of this mixture in in the morning with her crop mostly empty (since having sour crop it would never fully empty) and just let her have water for an hour before giving her a little food. I believe at this point I was giving her a little of her normal food (we were a little over the 3 week mark and I was worried about not giving enough calories but not too much food to cause her crop to be over filled). Throughout the day I’d give her a drop with her food. The next morning she had a completely empty crop!!!! I did the same thing that morning! So far she is completely emptying her crop. I am also giving kefir and coconut cult to help the good bacteria grow.
I can officially say she is on the mend.
I wanted to share what worked for us as chickens do die from sour crop and I was very worried.
This chick I picked out because she was not growing. She still looked like a day old chick and was being stepped on everyone. She would try and eat food from the other chicks beaks instead of eating. She has a weird toe (either a “birth” defect or broken and healed before I bought her). And while she will eat on her own now she is still really slow to grow. The sour crop definitely did not help things but did show she is a strong little one and well loved by God.
I hope our journey helps someone else chick/chicken
The brands I used : Herb and Spice (organic) oil of Wild Oregano Oreganol
Carlson Cod liver oil
