Guinea's!

Welllll,,,of course I worked all day today and I leave in the dark so had no idea how the day went. But when I got home and went back to throw hay and check on everyone they were actually laying down and not pacing, pacing, pacing!!!!
I know we are far from out of the woods yet and I can't thank you all enough for your help. Jackie, I like the molasses idea, I do have some I keep around here for the horses too!
So the end result is they will be in the pen for quite some time yet and when I do decide to let them out the actual deciding factor will be their behavior? Calm, not all worked up, not flying head long into the fencing....lol Geeezzz, my daughter thinks these birds are nuts.
And I don't get the buck wheat thing, they do not sound like that is what they are saying at all.

Hi,
Here's a link to the sounds of guineas:

http://www.guineafowl.com/fritsfarm/guineas/sounds/

I kinda think the girls sound like they are calling "buck weat". The boys sound aweful lol!

I am tossing the idea of guineas around-a man in our area has them and I have NEVER heard them make a racket. I keep wondering why everyone says they are really noisy-cause that mans guineas are so well behaved

.
Of course...I would be the one to get the guineas from "H-E-doubletoothpicks"!

I tried that link for the sounds and I can not get it to work, a computer master I am not. I just went out to put the 1month olds in their coop and the Guinea's are definately much calmer today. Whewwwwwwwwww.

I had guineas last year and unfortunatly mine left and never came back. I raised them from day olds on up and they were about 3-4 months when they flew the coop and got on outta here... but what really helped me out while I had them was the Guinea fowl message board....they are super friendly and would be more than happy to help you with any questions and they will provide you with tons of advice and suggestions...here is the link..

Hope this helps you!!!

Ps..By the way..I loved my guineas while I had them.....they were soo funny!!!

Thanks Bec, that is an informative site. I just have this nagging feeling that they will scram as soon as I let them out no matter how long they are in there. The woman that gave them to me first gave them to a neighbor 1 mile away and they found their way home. They are mingling with my chickens when I let them in the pen at dusk with no problems. After all this I hope they stay around!

After reading these experiences I am having second thoughts about getting any guineas. I love the way they look but if they are that loud and annoying I'm afraid they will upset the neighbors-we all have distance between us but it is so quite out here the sound carries. Not to mention my chickens-even my big roo doesn't crow much- and geese are peaceful in the barnyard. I feel like I would be throwing everything in the mix a big problem. I'm SO disappointed. Guess I want to be talked into it.I even looked into Vulturine breed because they were said to be not as loud but ,of course, way expensive. The people here that love their guineas must not mind noise or are some more peaceful than others?

Keep them penned for 6-7 weeks before they can free range.
That's what We did with our guineas and they'll stick around.
Oh, and our guineas get along fine with even our rooster.
