Hello everybody, I have a 6 month old Satin Showgirl who suddenly started with uri symptoms pretty severely. When I got home from work today I went out to close up the coop and my girl Aretha was still in the yard, huddled up. Immediately as I picked her up I could feel the crackles in her lungs, and she had an empty crop. She also had feces on her feathers around her vent. I brought her inside, washed her behind gently, and got her in a warm bathroom. I then gave her 0.1mL of Tylan 200 via IM injection, and left her alone. She’s open mouth breathing and it’s rattling/gurgling in her chest. She has zero discharge, her mouth is clean with no mucus, her eyes are clear. I have both Doxyvet and Enroflox oral liquids, anyone have an opinion on giving her one or both of these antibiotics alongside the tylan? I wanted to at least start with an injectable, buti don’t think tylan will be enough by itself, and I could potentially give enrofloxacin as an injection as I’m a veterinary nurse and could get some from work tomorrow.
Obviously I don’t want to overdo meds for her, and if she’s showing marked improvement tomorrow I won’t add anything in—but none of the vets at my clinic are versed in chickens so although I can get whatever medicine she needs, I need some advice from people here, please.
She was dewormed in October also, but it doesn’t look like gapeworm anyway. Last thing, I’m not worried about egg withdrawal time for her at all—she probably won’t start laying for another two months anyway. I just want to get her through this. Thank you all for any advice, in advance.

She passed away over night. Crop still empty, no fluid coming from her even in death. Nothing abnormal about her abdomen. Good muscling all over. Even the feces she produced over night looked normal. It was so sudden that I’m actually wondering if maybe she inhaled something yesterday. No one else has any symptoms, but obviously I’m going to keep a close watch. So sad. She was my best example of a satin Showgirl.

So sorry for your loss. It seems that you did what you could.

We have an avian flu warning (H5N1 i think) in the province where I live. I think the warning may even be all across Canada.

Omg thats so sad I’m so Sorry. Was she ever like thrashing around? And couldn’t walk? i had 2 baby chicks die from something like that. My others were showing symptoms like lethargy and clicking when they breathed. I gave them oxytetracycline via nebulizer and they sound and look much better. I’m so soory again it’s so unfair they’re like children to us

Sounds like a possible respiratory infection such as Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG), Infectious Coryza, Infectious Bronchitis (IBV) or Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT). It’s honestly very difficult to tell as they all present similarly. Watch your other birds for any signs or symptoms similar to your pullet as these respiratory diseases are highly contagious.

Thank you all for your replies, and your caring. So far no one else is showing any symptoms of illness at all. No sneezing, no bubbles in the eyes (like with Coryza), everyone is eating and drinking normally. Obviously I’ll be keeping a close eye on my other chooks, but I’m kind of at a loss because I do spend time with them and touch them and listen to them every night when I put them to bed. It was truly a sudden onset, I don’t know if she could’ve aspirated something in the 24 hours preceding her death, or if she could’ve had a respiratory illness like @Myrshine suggested. I’m familiar with Mg and coryza, and it didn’t look like either of those to me (although I’m no expert), but I’m going to look into IBV and ILT as these are diseases I’ve never seen. Just in case, would anyone recommend a course of maybe tylan in the water?

How did you administer via nebulizer? My chicks have rattling when/after chirping but are otherwise eating & active so I’m wondering what to do.

I bought tetracycline from tractor supply, and I stabbed the bottle ( o would recommend a needle but I don’t have one at that time) and ut some into the little cup. I left them in there for 10 minutes 2x a day, have alot of holes, or else they’ll be steamed up🤣. Here’s a video but I just held the nebulizer in there. This explains it better, good luck!

Video shows unavailable. So I’m confused. You put the nebulizer into their brooder box with the tetracycline into nebulizer cup so that they hopefully breath some in/receive some through the humidity from nebulizer? Is that right?

So if I put them into a closed box (with holes) with the nebulizer/tetracycline for 10 minutes that would be okay? Thanks so much!
