Usually my DH locks up the chickens but he was helping a neighbor. He did call to say that he was on his way hom so I was going to let him do it when he got home but the kids happened to "let" me go check on them (meaning playing happily with each other). As I was opening the door, the neighborhood cat turned and ran away - he was headed towards the chickens which were laying on the porch. Me opening the door scared the cat away and I guess the cat scared the chickens enough that I didn't have to do much to get them in their crate. WAs able to pick up the hens and the boys followed and went right in.

How old are your chickens? Was it dark and were they sleeping?

The reason I asked is because we have a LARGE 16+ pound cat who we let out on a little tether every once in a while when we're outside with him. Last year when I had my 3 RIRs I decided to see what would happen if I brought him out while they were free ranging.

As soon as they saw him, they puffed up and started strutting TOWARDS him. They were coming after him and he ran to the end of his tether. I picked him up and took him back inside while the girls returned to their scratching.

I had no idea chickens would go after a cat, but they sure did.

they were sleeping on the porch (they looked like one big pillow) - I don't know if they realized the cat was there - it just came into the light between our house and garage when I got out. My chickens are about 3 months old.

I don't know who's cat it is.
