I have 2 five gallon buckets in the run for the 6 girls. One is filled with crumbles the other with water using horizontal nipples. I check in with them every day and will offer meal worms and grit.
I either under estimated how much they drink or had an issue with the nipples because over the course of 10 days the water was basically empty. Could 6 hens drink 5 gallons of water in ten days???
I refilled the bucket and looked for a malfunctioning nipple but didn’t see anything wrong. When I put the water back in the run the girls attacked it and drank their fill. No one got ill or died, thank God!
Lesson learned!! Check their supplies daily.
I couldn’t forgive myself for outright negligence. I hope I’m a better chicken caregiver than I was before.
