Had a hen die...

We just found her dead in the coop. There is no sign of a predator in there, and she did not appear injured in any way.

They get lots of food and water.

Nobody appears sick in any way.

What do you suppose could cause my good hen to just die like that?

Is there some condition that could cause just one hen to die, like say, an egg got stuck or something?

I do look over my birds and try to be aware is anything is wrong, and I am a little distressed about this. She was not an old hen, last year's chick.

Sometimes they just die. Nifty had one die like you described, and I remember it wasn't anything preventable or contagious. He sent it off for a necropsy. ( I think it was UC Davis.)

Sorry for your loss. I had the same thing happen on Friday and i know how you feel. There was no sign of illness, nothing!

Sometimes that happens......and there is no reason at all.

If you are concerned you could send if for a necropsy....

It is very heartbreaking when that happens.
