We had a loss today. A six week old chick with a bottom beak that didn't grow. She did so well for so long - and then just couldn't keep up with her food/water needs. We knew she was in real trouble last night and separated her from her brood-mates and kept her warm by the fire. She died earlier today, though. Just went to sleep 🥺.

Here are some pics for reference for those who may want to cull before getting to this point. She was a sweet Easter Egger:

I did that the first time with a beak deformity. At first she did just fine, but when she died, I realized that like yours, as she grew bigger, she could not eat enough to support her. I would not keep one again.

At first, it just seemed as though her top beak was too big - we did trim it down and that seemed to help. Then it became evident in the last few days that the bottom beak just didn't grow. So sad. Lesson learned 😟.

i’m so sorry for your loss :( what a sweet little girl. even her poor little beak is cute, she kind of looks like gonzo from the muppets. compared to the ways most chickens pass i think thats a great way to go, peacefully, warm, safe and surrounded by friends.
