Had to bury my 19 chicks today.....

I'm so sorry.

I was 7 when a farmer shot my dog because it was going after his chickens. We should have been more careful to make sure he was secured. I've always felt terrible about it but I understand once a dog gets a taste for chicken there is often no going back. Good luck keeping them secure in the future. At least now you know.

Our chicks are inside and we are working hard to keep our cats away from them. I have my little dog on a leash in the house until the chicks move outside. He seems really happy to see them not in a yummy kind of way that my cats have but still not going to take a chance. I'll be extra careful now though after reading what happened to you.

Really? You would kill your dog for nibbling on a couple treats you brought home for him. I for one value the life of a dog much more than a chickens. I wouldn't be happy with my dog, but it wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Did you find more breeds at the market?

We have a beagle mix and a dachshund ... both seem way too interested in the 4 week old chicks for my liking ... the doxie is the more aggressive about it. As you said, it's just dogs doing what dogs do, but it sure makes me wonder how my great-grandmother trained her dog way back when -- they just all milled around the yard together. Of course she had had the dog and chicks for many years before I came along, so maybe he had learned the hard way.

Good luck with the new babies!

The market place sold out in one hour. They came in and had to fill the pre-orders but what was left which I'm told was alot are now gone. I found someone near me on craigs list that sells a bunch. I'm really interested in Silkies and she has eggs for $15.00 a dozen or babies pre-ordered in quantities of 12 for $2.00. I may check her out. I did get 24 from TSC yesterday. 12 bantams and 12 yellow who knows what. I did find out after researching my last chicks I had 3 Dominique chicks. Those are so pretty when they get big!

Oooh I wanted Dominques, but couldn't find them anywhere but mail order and not in time to get them started laying before cold weather arrived ....

I got 12 chicks from the red pullet bin at my local TSC - the lady there said they'd either be RIR, NHR or Red Sexlinks, judging from the pics on here they look more RIR than anything else.

Congrats on the new babies - and still many condolences on the ones lost. All part of nature I know, but not one of the better parts.
