i have two hens that I hatched out last fall, both are barred. The rooster is a white created black polish, one hen is from the only EE I had in there, and the second hen I’m not quite sure who momma is. The other breeds that were in the coop were Delaware, welsummer, and salmon Faverolles. Is there a hidden barred gene? I had nine chicks, all were barred, or barring out of that coop, but unfortunately I lost the rest :( the pics are of the rooster, one hen with single comb, and the other with pea? Comb.

Those hens are definitely not polish mixes. Are you sure the polish was the father? Could another rooster have gotten in with your hens, even for a short time?

No, another rooster couldn’t have gotten in, but, I do have two coops, and one had a barred rock rooster. I did separate incubations, so I thought I had them separated but if it’s not possible, I’m now thinking I got something mixed up.

The barred rock was definitely the father. If the polish was, they would both have crests.

Delawares do carry barring. However if the Delaware were the mother, the barred offspring would be male. She can't pass the barred gene onto female offspring. So the barred Rock has to be the father.

Ok thank you guys. I kinda feel dumb now asking, seeing as I just got my birds mixed up. So polish always pass on the crest?
