OMG I just did a head count on my birds which I have 60 chickens. Almost half are roosters.... In September we are planning to butcher most of them, At our annual chick day I got 10 free RIR straight run chicks for buying 5 bags of feed, 7 out of 10 ended up being roosters. It is just awful, I have been freeranging my birds because they are overcrowded in their run which is equipped for about 45 full size chooks. So come September my girls will be a bit happier to have leftover space. Don't get me wrong my pen is decently comfy for my birds but once they are full grown it wont be. They are able to roam the property during the day and are only in the run/coop at night. My question is..... Will my roos be tender enough to eat at about 6 months old? I heard that roosters are less tender than hens and that after a certain age are very tough. Can anyone help me on that?

We had some mixed breed roosters that were rubbery and impossible to eat after what we guess was 4 months of age. These were given to us and free isn't always good because all you have is whatever info the previous owners give... It's not always accurate! In either case the roosters were just starting to crow so whatever that age...

I don't know if this helped any but that was our experience.

My 4-6 month production reds, Langshons, and mutts have always been great. More flavor, more texture, not mushy like store chickens. I do cook most things low and slow.
