Hi, all, brand new here. We don't even have chickens yet; my husband is almost done getting the hardware cloth up on the coop/run he's building, then he's got to get to the coop itself. It's coming along great. Once it's done and I blog it, I'll post photos.

We're already beekeepers, so my husband has been pushing to have chickens for about 2 years now, and after our visit to the state fair a couple weeks ago, I kind of fell in love with them too. We've got a local farmer selling us some as soon as we're ready, so at this point, we're getting really impatient but need to get everything done right and secure. Lots of predators in our area (north Jersey) and the last thing we want is to get chickens just to have them eaten!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How exciting for you to be getting your chicken adventures started. It's a lovely hobby to have, lots of fun and very rewarding. I'm sure you will enjoy it very much. Great to hear you are making everything predator proof, I've suffered a loss before and it's very upsetting. I hade to make things more secure after that.

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future with your new birds. Be sure to ask any questions, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I think you will enjoy keeping chickens. Predators are a fact of life, but if you build your coop and run properly, you should never have a problem. Build it like you yourself were going to be sleeping in there at night. Ha! If you feel safe, then the birds will be safe. Predators have a lot of time on their hands all night long. So build it sturdy and heavy.

As for getting out during the day, we have hordes of daytime predators too. So I let the flock out for about 2 hours a day in a fenced off area while I am around the yard or cleaning the coop and such. Never are they alone. When they are not outside, they have a giant run to hang out in.

Good luck with this new adventure and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to the BYC flock. You may want to check out the coops and predator sections for advice about repelling your most common predators.

Good for you on getting the coop/run done before the chickens arrive. What breed are you getting? You'll have to share a picture of them when you get them.

If you'd like to connect with the other NJ members, you can find some of them here on your state thread:

It can be helpful to chat with others in your area on things like weather issues, swap meets, predators, etc.

Thanks for joining us!
