HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Hubby discovered our first button quail this morning. We have another one tonight.
Wow...small doesn't quite cover it.

What itty bitty little things!
I'm not entirely certain that button quail are MY thing.

If I can keep them alive, I'll be doing well.

Of course when I have a house full of monogamous pairs, y'all can throw this post in my face...

They remind me of a bumble bee that's been hit by a tennis racket.
I wouldn't call them cute. They're more....interesting like pink, baby mice.
I think chicks are more my thing.
Here's the pics...

First baby quail.

Second baby quail pipping...and then out.

Amen. I am so happy but will be able to exhale more after day 11. Last time i had a homemade bator that was still air, temp always wonky and out of 12 egg's only 1 developed and was my baby. I was crushed when it quit on day 11. Now I have a new bator with a fan. Temps are great, humidity great. On day 9, going into 10. Wont totally exhale until they hatch. I asked God to send Angel's around the bator to keep them safe.
You should check out the dry hatch method for incubation, at least for an interesting read if nothing else. Since I swapped over to dry hatching, it's extremely rare that I get less than a 95% hatch rate on 24 eggs unless I'm dealing with shipped eggs, which are a different beast entirely. Either way, good luck with your hatch!

I tried the dry hatch with the last batch and the air cell's did not grow. I am in California and finally figured out the right level. Thank you for the advice.

Oh they are tiny and very cute. Congrats.

I have another Australorp nesting tonight. I haven't actually seen it, was only told about it, so I haven't assessed the situation. I will keep a close eye on her and her behavior the next few days and see what happens. If she is wanting to brood, that will give me 3 November mommas. We'll see how it goes! My two Brahmas are doing great so far. They switch nests frequently, just depends on if someone else gets in their nest boxes to lay while they happen to be out. If so, they just move to the other nest! Lol I haven't candled the eggs yet, but will in the next couple days. They will be easy to candle because these two hens are so calm and laid back. I can pick them up if need be, but they are usually off their nests at the same time every day for a good hour at a time. Makes it very easy to check for new eggs, and as I said, will make candling eassy.
A couple questions (if this next hen does want to brood):
1. I am thinking of adding some white egg layers to our flock, and Duke loves the Polish chickens. Does anyone have a mixture of Polish eggs for sale if we decide to go that route?
2. We also want to add Dark Brahmas. Does anybody have Dark Brahma eggs for sale if we decide to go that route?
We live in SE Idaho.

Please tell me the magic number? Lol. I'm in Northern California, Bay Area... still struggling between not enough air cell growth and too much :( (all shipped eggs though)

No such thing as a magic number. There are so many things that can affect it like season, elevation, and weather. This time of year, I get a decent hatch rate if I keep the humidity at about 40 to 45.

Currently in my styrofoam covered cheapy china incubator, a lot of eggs are doing well...including a set that should have been scrambled... I just have 3 eggs (out of 50) with crazy aircells, lookin like day 19/20...no idea how to fix for those few... would a damp paper towel be a bad idea? I bumped humidity to 60, or so the machine says, I don't have my back up hydrometer in there yet, still have one chick hatching in other incubator...but I'll have a better read in next day or so... the eggs in question are at days 14 and 16... just hope they stall on fluid loss. Anyhoo, bed time.
