Hello I am Carl Kirby (AKA HaloKirb's Urban farm on Facebook). Here is my intro:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am brand new to chickens. I am so new that I have not purchased my flock yet. I am still finishing my coop and run.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Right now, none.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Right now, none. We are looking at Silkies for sure. We also want other breeds, any suggestions?

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Facebook and internet.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I am a huge baseball fan, specifically the Halos!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have 2 young daughters and a wife. We live in SoCal. I am a continuation high school teacher. My brother is Blake Kirby AKA DaddyKirbs from DaddyKirbs Farm out of San Antonio, Texas. Check out his YouTube channel.

Welcome to BYC! I appreciate your very good, thorough introduction. My wife and I were raised in Texas, and I am a retired high school teacher myself (Physics and Physical Science), and just raisin' chickens. I used to have black Silkies. They were very friendly, gentle little birds, and good brooders and mothers. As far as suggestions, I you want a standard sized breed for eggs, I would suggest Black Australorps. They are very hardy, calm and gentle birds that will not batter your Silkies, and are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Hi and welcome to the flock. Please visit the "Silkie thread," to talk to real silkie people and see their stock. You may find what you are seeking. Breeder stock is usually much better type than those sold from hatcheries and feed stores.

Silkies however are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age, so if someone offers you "sexed" young chicks, back off - unless you don't mind having a lot of cockerels to deal with.

You may also like "show girls" (girl applies to both males & females) they are a variety of silkie. You can find a thread for them also, if you want to check them out. They have silkie characteristics but naked necks, or partially naked with a bow tie of feathers in the middle.

If I were to buy my flock online, who is the best to go through? I have looked at California Hatcheries but they are out of stock on Silkies. I want all of our Chickens to be relatively the same age. I have never bought chickens before so I am without a clue on this.

How soon do you want get your Silkies? Buying them this late in the summer may be a problem for a lot of hatcheries. Also, is there any particular variety of Silkies you want? I would highly recommend Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, Idaho (http://dunlaphatchery.net/), but they ship only from mid-February through the end of June, and while I love their service and birds, they breed only the Black and White Silkies. I think you can still get them this late in the summer from Murray McMurray Hatchery in Iowa (http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/index.html). They breed Black, Blue, Buff, and White Silkies. I have ordered from them several times and have been satisfied with their service and birds. You may also still be able to get them from Ideal Poultry in Cameron, TX (http://www.idealpoultry.com/index.html). Ideal is a huge hatchery that breeds Black, Blue, Buff, Gray, Partridge, Red, and White Silkies. I have ordered Black Silkies from them as far away as Hawaii and have been satisfied with their service and birds, only losing a couple of chicks in shipping, and since they put three extra in the box, I got what I paid for.
