Do Silkies mix well with other breeds? We want strong egg layers as well. As far as the timing, we are undetermined on this. I still have a lot of research to do first. Thanks for the reply.
Silkies are friendly and gentle and will mix well with other breeds. However, they are bantams, and I would not recommend putting them in with standard sized breeds that are aggressive or they are likely to take a beating. Calm and gentle standard sized breeds such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, or Faverolles should do fine with Silkies.
We have selected our breeder. We are getting our birds from Chickens Galore! In Norco, CA. our coop is finished and we are beginning work on the run. The run is the final stage before we get chickens. The run should be complete next week or the week after. I will attach some pictures.
I apologize for not keeping up with this thread. Life has been crazy busy on the farm. We have had to move and remodel our coop. We are in the process of doing that. It is nearing completion. After we complete the coop and the run, we will decide on chickens breeds. We need kid-friendly chickens. I am thinking Easter Eggers and maybe a barred rock. Are these kid-friendly? Our Facebook page is doing well. In case you did not know, our Facebook page is called Halokirb's Urban Farm. I invite everyone to join us there. We post articles, videos, and other items relating to Urban farming every day. Come and like our page. We would appreciate it. If you have insight into chicken breeds that lay well and are kid-friendly, drop us a line either here or on Facebook. God bless!
