Are there any BYC'ers in the Hampton Roads VA area? I won't ask what city because a in a few HR cities chickens are outlaws. I have RSL's, a BO/Wyandotte mix, some EE's and now runner ducks. What do you have? I'm looking for some eggs to hatch out in my incubator, I bought some thru BYC but they were scrambled by the PO. I was hoping to find some local Silkie chickens or rouen/runner duck eggs to hatch.

Hi! I'm from the HR area...Yorktown. I don't have any eggs to give and no rooster. My tetra tints are just coming up on 5 months but they are Ll laying 1 egg a day!:D
~cheers~ Crystal

I just moved to Yorktown VA!! So I saw a few chicken coops in my area, which confirm I can have chickens here! Do any of you insulate your coops? I just ordered a pair of cream leg bars, pair of black marans, one araucana and 2 Road island reds!!

Hello! I am in Yorktown too, Welcome!

You can have chickens in the County - permit process is pretty easy.

You can have up to 16 chickens but they divide that by your property square footage. I have 3/4 acre and can have all 16. Your coop must be 10 feet from an adjacent property line and they look at your setup to make sure it is humane for the chickens. I have not insulated my coop but with the recent freezing temperatures I do have a bulb in there for heat. This year has been an abnormal year for rain and temps and I think it will be a cold and bitter winter with snow and ice in January/February. Brrr!

Thank you for the reply Crystal!! We have almost an acre. I noticed the temperatures! For know I just bring her inside the house to sleep and then put her outside! Now what about predators? Snakes? We have 5 dogs, they are contained with invisible fence so I was hoping that their smell will scare any potential predators!

:)
