Hamster rash question.

Most of the breeders I know will not use the cages with tubes. Sometimes hamsters are too large for them (the standard for a Syrian calls for the animal to be as large as possible without being fat), they are hard to clean and can harbor bacteria, and they sometimes tend to come loose offering a chance for escape. Most actually use aquariums or plastic totes with wire tops. A very common cage is to take a clear plastic tote, cut a square hole in the top, then put wire over the hole using a hot glue gun and a few nuts and bolts to hold the wire in place. Personally, because of space here, I use a cage called My Super Pet or something like that. It has a deep plastic base with the top half being wire. I like wire cages because to me they sort of double the space since the hamster gets to climb on them. Mine treat them like monkey bars. Many breeders will not use wire because they are afraid babies will get stuck in it and get hurt, but the bottoms on these are deep enough that that is not usually a problem. I've only ever had one baby to get out through the wire out of all the litters I have raised. Luckily, I have a really great locally owned pet store here in town that buys my babies for store credit, so my hamsters pay for my dog food! lol I will try to post pics of some of the ham's sometime...I raise mostly tricolors and silvergrays, which is a fairly unusual color to find.

I am definitely switching to the aquariums for everyone then.

I have always been afraid of the tubes (and it is a definite tight fit) but made sure I could pop them apart just in case of emergency. Rose (the rashy girl) is going to miss having bars more than any of the others. She gets up to the top and swings from them...you can tell she is having a blast. I am going to have plenty of fun stuff in the aquariums though so they have a lot to entertain themselves

I would love to see pics of yours. Our pet shop had 2 of the silvergrays a few weeks ago. That was the only time I have seen that color and it was all I could do to keep from getting one!!! They were just stunning! I am always amazed at what a beautiful, sweet, perfect little handfull hamsters are.

I actually caught ringworm from a cat many years ago.......I know, EEEEWWWWW!!!! And this doesn't look like it...but I really have no idea what it would look like on a small animal. Just like on a person?

It might be the new water bottle. Is she in contact with the plastic on it?

When we got our Boxer, he had an awful rash all over his jowls. We took him to our vet, and he took one look and said, get rid of the plastic bowls.

We put him on ceramic crock-type bowls, and voila! no more rash.

His rash was a bright red, pimply looking rash.

Good luck with your hammy. My last hammy lived to the ripe old age of 5 years, 3 months. I absolutely bawled like a baby when she passed.

Hey luvmychicknkids...here are pics of a couple of my ham's....I used to have better stock. The last generation or two I made the mistake of focusing on color rather than type. Their coats are not as long and full as they should be, and they are not quite as large as they should be. I am going to get back a breeding male I gave away to use again to see if I can get some new breeders that are more up to par.

While we are on the topic of hammys....

Other than daily combings... how do you keep knots out of their fluffy fur?

Tooms as a baby...he's still pretty fluffy but has grown into his fur a little better as of late.

Rose moved into a new cage today (I got her an aquarium) with a different water bottle (won't be in contact with any plastic) so I am hoping it clears up. I also went ahead and put corncob litter this time.

Awwwww silkiechicken......he is so cute with his little peanut. We only have one longhaired one and he NEVER gets mats.....he is strange though. Very delicate and prissy.....insanely picky about the "order" of his stuff. If I didn't know better I would swear he was a girl with princess syndrome!!!

Tooms is a really pretty sable banded male. That's a great coat length, especially if it has filled in more. They usually don't get that kind of length until they are completely grown, and then the majority do not get one quite that long. He's really nice. Looks like he has a nice, broad face, too. One of the things we strive for is a wider head rather than the narrow rat-looking head.

I'm sure your girl will love her new cage, luvmychicks.....I prefer corn cob litter, myself. I just dump it into the flower beds or field, although I do get weeds from the seed sometimes! lol

I hope Rose's rash goes away. I like aquariums since they can't kick shavings out of it.

I always thought they had short stumpy faces until I saw one my cousin had who really did look like a short tailed rat! Then again, I've always bought my hammys from the same pet store chain so they've always been pretty similar.

I don't have a recent pic of tooms but he has fattened up since his baby days. However, his coat isn't as big and fluffy as it is in the pic anymore... He grew into it. Still likes to get tangles though. A bit lop sided after he got a chunk of shavings stuck on his rear and required a trim...
