Hand-turning vs. auto-turning

I think most turners only go between 45 and 90 º (you would need to check yours)

so if you turn 180º either once a day or three times a day you should be good! (your choice as to how many times you turn.. but make it an odd number)

by turning 180º the side of the egg that was on the bottom.. becomes the top.. it encourages more vein growth all the way around the egg rather than just tilting the egg back and forth

Are you turning the egg upside down, or rotating it?

(sorry, just trying to figure out what you're doing...)

lol.. that's ok

the eggs laying on their sides.. they would be turned so whichever side is facing up would become the side facing the floor of the bator.. so rolling them over as the egg would naturally roll... NOT turning them end over end

Oh, I see what you mean! I don't think my turner works the same way yours does - my turner's a chicken egg turner, like an egg carton, with the big ends up.

I like what you're talking about though - although I don't think it'll work quite the same as yours. What does your turner look like? Or do you have the same sort of turner with goose racks on it?

Thank you for your help!

I've been rotating a quarter-turn in the turner every night - is it bad to just do a quarter turn? I would do a half-turn, but that wouldn't change their orientation really for the auto-turning.

Yes it would . I have the same kind of turners that you do. I turn mine 180 degrees. That means if the fat ends of the eggs are standing up and you put a x on the SIDE of the egg, like this see the 2 on the egg turn it exactly away from you.

i just got my cayuga eggs in today and i want a good hatch. im going to be tuning by hand till the 22nd then i will have to put them into an auto turner so the chicken eggs can hatch. im hoping it all goes well this is my first time so im nervous about it...these take 28 days to hatch correct

ONE MORE question about hand turning (my East Indie Duck eggs are on Day 2)....

Do you turn them 180deg. from the top side to the bottom side and then back up--reverse motion--to the top side on the next turn? Or do you turn them a full 360deg. within the span of two turns, and then back to the 180 mark, and back to the 0deg. point by the 4th turn? Would it be just like an auto turner exept a greater degree angle?
