Handling Gloves for Parrots.

Hello everyone...

I need help in finding a good pair of handling gloves... Something that will help if my macaw decides to take a chunck out of me. I know some people dont belive in handling gloves while others do, I dont want the gloves to be handling the parrots on a routine baises... I want them for emergencies, or moving birds... My Parrots are set up in breeding pairs... so some are very nice, and others are quite nasty.... I moved my Blue and Golds this week to a new roomier cage... and was moving the male a challange... he still resents me... its been 48 hours and he still wants to kill me... just me, not anyone else. he lunges for me, not my friends not my dad.. .just me...

I don't know if it would help for parrots, but when I was a vet tech and we had to deal with a feral cat or a disgruntled dog, we had two pair of leather welding gloves we'd wear during handling.

They were thick leather and went up to the elbow. Some of those ferals would latch on and just chew and chew. Prevented a lot of injuries.

I don't know if it would work with parrots or not. I once had a tiny little lovebird bit my index finger to the bone. Wicked little thing that she was. Those beaks are nothing to mess with, especially if they're ticked off.

You can get a set of those gloves from any hardware store, I'd think. They're probably a $30 or $40 investment, but if it would save your fingers, well worth the price.

When I need to handle other people's parrots for procedures, I've always used the towel technique, rather than gloves. That can work in emergencies and for transport, also. The towel has the added advantage of blocking any visual stimulus that can increase fear and aggression responses.
