Hands on hatching and help

I have another question if anyone has the time or patience!!! How long can a duckling stay in its shell with a small external pip?

Dang that's good to know. I have quite a few anconas due in a week or so.. :)

There's plenty of experienced duck hatchers right here... WV is excellent at guiding for assistance, Ruby has now hatched 2 batches of shipped Calls and 1 batch of locals... she may not admit it, but she did exceptionally well and I have no doubt can guide now as well... I am always available as well, just might need to tag me or PM to get my attention, lol...

My hatch is almost over. Locked down 13 golden sebrights, 1 was questionable at lockdown, but I left it in. I dont think it will hatch, but 11 have so far and the 12th is pipped with beak showing.

4 lavender orpingtons locked down, 3 have hatched, nothing from the last, but its still day 21, so I'll leave it. I'm surprised they hatched on the end of day 20 anyway, they are usually 21/22 day-ers.

So I'm ecstatic with them so far. I've only moved the first 5 to the brooder, so the Brinsea is quite crowded with chicks right now! Waiting on that last one, then I'll move them and get some pics.

@audy5000g after having such a good hatch result, I'm more inclined to blame the post office for your issues. I was scared my birds had developed an unseen problem, but these look fine, so I'm standing by my birds. How are yours doing now?

Yay!!! Great hatch, WV! :highfive:

Bummed. It's day 10 and bout 5 of my silkie eggs were showing infertile when I candled them. 2 looked to have recently passed. I'm think because I dropped one on the other when turning them the other morning. They didn't break but we're jolted badly. So far I'm only seeing about 5 that are doing what they should be. Hopefully a few hatch.. :(

So sorry, that's a bummer... will keep :fl for the 5...

I have a broody hen who is really ruining it for me lol. She's at about day 10 or 11 and all I know is she is sitting on at least 3 eggs. I really want to sneak out there and candle tonight but she is doing such a good job I probably shouldn't mess with her.
You should see the 'snack plates' I prepare for her twice a day. Cooked peas, lentils, corn and spinach with some fish, fresh picked dandelion leaves, a little grit, a pinch of my hand ground scratch feed. All lovingly served in a seashell shaped, porcelain dish within easy reach. Hey, if ya gotta be on bed rest for your entire pregnancy it should at least feel like a spa!

Great job!  They are adorable.  :yiipchick

I have one that didn't draw down, but it still pipped.  I actually expected it was already DIS because it wasn't drawing down.  I'll see what happens with it when I get home.

What does DIS mean?
The One I Helped Hatch I Thought Was Dead, (it was the egg with Wax I Helped), So I Opened The Air Cell To Do An EggTopsy, I Found An Air Cell Pip, It Couldn't BREATHE, The Position In The Egg Wouldn't allow him to Pip the shell, after an hour or two of helping, he had absorbed everything, he was really weak though because he developed in a ROUND EGG, he is the smallest out of all of my New Baby Chicks.
I Would have had 5 baby chicks but one died before it internally Pip.

48 hrs easy... ducks take their sweet time, for sure...

thank you. If you don't mind a pm in absolute panic mode every now and again :gig I will keep that in mind!! It never fails it happens late when the threads have gone dead for the night!! :he I'm glad to know they can take their sweet time though it already feels like an eternity when you're waiting hoping they're OK then to only have a small hole to keep checking on them and I'm afraid of the shrink wrap thing!! Sorry to ramble just totally worked up and worn out over this hatch! Thank you for the advice and lending an ear!!

My sister in law had twin quails hatch! One died after a few hours, but I think the other lived on. I can't remember. But the quail are so tiny to begin with, it was truly amazing!
Ravyn beat me to it. :)
oh no!! I have quail in the bator!!! :he :gig I swear if I didn't have the weirdest luck I'd have none!!! Glad one of hers made it though!!
