Hands on hatching and help

I would use gloves there cheep compared to emergency issues. $5.00-$8.00 for a box of disposable gloves. What we use. Or mealworms so you don't have that again.

They were digging earthworms for fishing. I have a meal worm farm for my birds..
Kinda hard to tell a 6 year old boy he has to wear gloves to play in the dirt.. he's all boy..

Believe me. I know about emergency rooms. I should go to dr myself. But I suffer through the pain. And illness I have. Tell it runs me to the ground. Then I still try. The only time I get a break is when they hospitalize me. For days. Then I want to go home . Because my house is crazy with eggs animals ducks chicken rabbits ect.

It wouldn't be ideal, but if worse came to worse I don't think 24 hours would be a compromiser.     I don't pick mineup unless I am candling too, I usually just roll them.

Good idea. Could set them upright in a carton for a day and have her tilt.

Ok, I am not knocking other methods than the heat light, I can see where it is the least natural and it does run a high concern for fire. I still use my brooder light. I do worry constantly about the heat coming off it against the wall and cage, I will say that, but other than that, I have had no problems with my chicks feathering out, with pasty butt with sleep patterns. At night they lay down and go to sleep no problems. Usually once they start feathering in decent and it's warm inside, I shut it off for a few hours a day, only using it when it's cooler or at night until  they are feathered in.  Every one of my girls in the coop were raised under the broody light and they transtioned just fine.  I do brood inside my house for at least 6 weeks.  Yes, what a friggin pain. And dust...OMG, but it's always worked for me.  I just don't understand the talk about pasty butt and night habits.    Never had a problem.

:frow :hugs

 I have four of the large heat bulbs hooked up for my babies right now. I'd like to change over simply for electric costs, but I don't have 100$ to spend on all the heating pads I'd need. Currently have two batches of CX, 7 of em at 4 wks and 20 at 2 wks. Then there's 6 Svart Hona, 3 Mearlault or Lyoniese X(sp?) 9 assorted bantys, 18 quailings and 48 eggs due today, 2 currently hatched in the bator w 14 pips. 11 call ducks due in another two wks. Oh and 4 ducklings 2 wks old.

I finally pulled my new hova bator 1583 out of the box. This thing is huge!! I might need help setting up the thermostat if anyone knows how....

Sorry for the super long multi-quote...
:celebrate that is awesome!! You're going to have a lot of silkies running around! :gig
I hope he's doing ok!! One of the nurses accidentally did something wrong which created a whole new problem, so I've got a ton going on right now but today he seems to be 100%!!
My neighbor/landlord custom built a dozen "bat boxes" and put them up all over his property!! :th
Were these local or shipped eggs? Did you calibrate your thermometer to make sure your temps were accurate?
My mom has severe dyslexia and while we were at the hospital I asked her to turn my eggs and she was to scared to touch them. So my two batches (my silkies and shipped call duck eggs) sat for over 48 hours without being turned. All the call eggs are still alive and I only candled a few of the silkies but all seemed ok. But the silkies were on day 10 and the calls were on day 18.
Good idea!!
Congrats on the baby! What's going on with all the other eggs? Have you candled them?
I take the middle road between heat lights and mph. I have an awesome mph that I made and love. But I also like to use a red heat light for the first week. Just my own opinion, but I think they start eating and drinking faster and more consistently with the light. Once they are acting like little piggys I move them to a bigger brooder and switch to the mph. This has been working good for me, sorta like the best of both worlds.
Are you serious?? I'm going to start looking ASAP. If you ever come across another one on Amazon close to that price please forward me a link immediately! :)

:frow :hugs been too long since I've seen u ladies, glad ur lil one is on the mend. I like your strategy there and it would probly be mine once I can invest in heating pads. I have two or three, but I Need my heating pads for my body im not ready to give em up to the birds (they get Everything! :lau)

I got the feeling. On heating pads. I give mine up to my kits only for a few weeks then there mine. And there all separated now. So no I am not ready to give them to ducks and chickens. And it would cost a lot for me to invest that many from how many I hatch every 3 weeks. Or so.

I get the boy thing . Have 4 of my own .19 17 15. 5 . But sores get infected. He has to protect himself when he has sores. Any body or animal. Wash hand immedently.

I get the cheap ones..right now I'm brooding about 60 chicks with 3 heating pads that I refer to as my "dollar store specials".. but even when I had 270 chicks, it only took 6 or 7 pads to cover them all. Each of the ones I make will cover about 30 regular size chicks, and about 40+ bantam babies..
I did use the heat mat and the electric heater tho when I had the large group just to be safe. But I buy one when ever I have an extra few bucks laying around. The original pad I bought 3 years ago, and it's still working just fine.. I figured at first that I'd be lucky to get one to last 3 months considering they were so cheap and considering the source and that I run them 24/7 from about January until late May or so... but they shocked me and are still going strong.. I did have one that split on the outside seam after about 2 weeks of use, but my store was great and swapped it out for a new one.. my local dollar general knows me all too well..lol..they keep any returned storage totes for me (bc of a crack, broken clasp, etc), any of the giant boxes they get stock in, if I get low on shelf liner, I know they always keep it in stock for me..
I'm going to make a trip to the pet store tomorrow tho..I'm gonna see how well a reptile heat mat will work for a cave. . They would probably be safer in the long run, but have to test one first and make sure it will stay warm enough

Turk! We miss you!

@RubyNala97
Glad he's doing better ♡♡ We have a local hospital that is notorious for making issues worse :'(

Here was our ordeal.. 2 antibiotics, soaks every 3 hours. .doctors tried sticking him in 4 different spots to get it to drain and only succeeded in making him scream bloody murder and drawing blood from all 4 sticks.. morons..
I talked him through working it to get it to drain..he was finally successful about 9 last night.. at least enough for some relief for him amyways.
Torn hang nail + digging in compost pile for worms = not a good idea

Oh my GOSH! Watch that carefully! I had two small lipomas removed from the top of my hand. Got the stitches out and it looked great. One teeny little spot was still a bit open, but the doctor put Steri-strips on it and said when they fall off, they fall off....just leave them off. A week later and all was well, strips had fallen off, and little open spot looked healed. Our compost was delivered so I put on vinyl gloves and then then work gloves over them and helped Ken in the garden.

May 30th I was fine. May 31st I was in the emergency room at St. Vincent's Hospital signing permission for amputation. I had gas gangrene. It came on fast, and it was ugly. If you touched the top of my hand it sounded like walking on Rice Krispies. I was up there for 10 full days, had 3 operations on it, debridment in a whirlpool every day, and 3 different IV antibiotics going in 24/7 - they alternated. As soon as a bag of one type was empty a bag of the next kind went in. I was NPO every single night because until the surgeon came in for rounds in the morning and checked it, we didn't know if I'd have a trip to the OR. (I hung him in effigy from my hospital room door to get through to him that waiting from 6 PM until whenever he decided to wander in wasn't acceptable - he got the message) Amputation was always on the table. All this was the last of May. I got my bandages off the end of October. The cultures showed both E.Coli and Clostridium Perfringens, plus a couple of other pathogens....so I had anaerobic and aerobic thingies living in there.

Folks tease me sometimes about being such a germaphobe. I learned first hand the power of those microscopic little boogers, and nothing scares me more than contact with compost, poop, garden dirt.......gives me the heebies! I don't tell you this to scare you - well, yes, maybe I do a little. I don't ever want to see anyone go through that nightmare!!! So watch it carefully!!
