Hands on hatching and help

Thanks. I'm definitely still learning all this. I was worried after I made the safety hole that maybe they couldn't pip themselves lol. I know it sounds silly. After that, one did actually pip all by itself lol.

Ok thanks. I know alot of this you learn from experience but these eggs are really special to me. I've wanted silkies forever and I can't get them locally so of course I'm terrified of losing even one.

Getting in on the game a little late here, but I understand your frustration with wanting a particular chick for so long and having it just happen with shipped eggs. I almost gave up completely after 3 abysmal hatches, but got helped into trying once more....Amy and Ruby, are you listening?

I broke down and ordered shipped eggs again, this time Silkie eggs from @RubyNala97 Man, were they FRESH...and I couldn't even find air cells on them the first day!! They were packaged very well, but I think the key is the way she handles them from collection from shipping. She gathered these on Sunday and shipped them on Monday. I had them on Wednesday. And I had my best hatch ever! Out of 16 eggs, I had one clear. One. All of the others developed steadily. I had 9 hatch. I think I messed up the humidity at the end, because 5 of the eggs looked like mummies inside the shell when I opened them......the membranes were dark and totally sucked down tightly all around the chicks. So I blame that totally on me. If they'd have continued on to hatch like they could have, I would have had 14 out of 16 eggs hatch. Phenomenal for shipped eggs!! If this hatch doesn't work out the way you want, I can't recommend her highly enough!!

All of mine hatched, but the last few days were so nerve-wracking that I know I don't want to hatch for a while again! I can't inagine how I'd feel if most if them hadn't made it. Hope you are able to rest and recover!

It's hard because my first hatch was shipped and 8 out of 9 hatched. My second was 4 out of 6. This is my third one and 3 out of 5 isn't bad but the 3rd one may not make it. Thankfully the first 2 are in wonderful health. :)

Sorry Jennifer. Hatching is hard. Hope the ones you have will stay strong.

Me too. The little yellow one was doing great this morning but then when I give it water and it actually drinks it starts making the fish mouth. I'm worried about maybe a respiratory problem. I think with that batch the flick must have not been so healthy. :(

Maybe someday lol. For now I'm just going to hatch what I have and take a break for awhile. I love these little guys but I'm so exhausted. It may be awhile before I'm ready to take this all on again. :)

I am soooooo glad you did too!!!

I wouldn't blame yourself though. I think just about every instance of truely shrink wrapped eggs I've had has been from silkie eggs. Out of the 14 eggs I got from Ruby that made it to lock down I only had two that didn't hatch out, and one of them was shrink wrapped. I ran my humidity higher for those eggs than any other eggs I have incubated. I was nervous running them as high as I did, but the air cells said that's what they needed (and so did Ruby...lol) so that's what they got.

Ugh the little buff baby is not doing well. I thought wry neck but it seems to be swollen. Last night when I peeled some of the shell away it had like a vein or something super tight around its eye and neck. It seemed like it was doing better until I gave it some water this morning. I'm think their may be damage. I've never culled anything before but if it doesn't look better by tomorrow I think that would be the humane thing to do. It's not walking and can't lift it's head. Hoping for a miracle..

Sorry to hear that. That sucks. Hope it turns around for you.

@Blooie I thought I had taken better pics of my Blooie for you, but now I can't find them if I did. After the "incident" I forgot I had taken some and I fear they might have gotten cleared when I was clearing pics from the IPad. I will get some better ones too, but for now, here's my Blooie. (Cayden has claimed him/her as his favorite, lol)
