My husband went outside and today and almost ran into our neighborhood hawk. Unfortunatly he was perched in a tree about 6ft from our chicken run. Thankfully our hens took cover in time. My husband said he got within 2 feet of the hawk and snapped the first picture. A couple hours later he was in another tree, second picture. He was watching our hillside for mice and other little sqeakers and not our hens.

Well, it's good he didn't get to the flock! Our chicken run is covered, and my uncle practically built them a house instead of a coop, so they're spoiled! But all of them are sweethearts. Again, I'm glad the hawk wasn't watching the hens!

What a beautiful picture, Almost migration time for them and many winter over here in Ok. I have counted as many as twenty on the nine mile drive to work in the morning during the dead of winter.

We have two hawks and some falcons at my aunt's where the chickens live. They leave each other alone, but they all know that we have chickens, because they circle directly above the coop... *frowns* I hope they know there's a mesh roof over the run!

We had a little sharp-shinned that haunted our yard for 2-3 days. I heard a lot of sqauking and actually saw the bird in the middle of the yard, but no hits. After a few days of no luck he disappeared. Our rooster, as well as the jays and crows were furious; it was very noisy for several days. I haven't seen him/her back since. I assume it went on to the neighboring fields/forests where the chipmunks/squirrels and mice are very active right now storing up food.

I had no idea they migrated. This hawk, whom my husband calls Hank, has been hanging around our area for the past year. When we first saw him in the spring he looked like he was very young. He's really helped keep the squirrel and mice population down. Hopefully enough that I don't have to do my annual rodent eviction from my attic! We love having him around...that is as long as he leaves our hens alone. So far he seems not to care about them and is usually hunting on our hillside or fields.

What a majestic creature! I'm so shocked DH could get that close - neat! Thanks for sharing pics!!

He is a handsome devil isn't he? or maybe a she? either way they're almost too good looking. Though I'm happy he didn't get any of your chickens. And youdon't want to think he's not looking at your chickens at all. I've the same kind here & he/she has taken several swipes at mine though not for weeks after stalking them out....
