I know I want my feeder inside the coop, but I don’t know if I should get a hanging one or a wall mount one? My chicks are 2 weeks old and they’re messy little things scratching at their feed!

What do you have and why?!

In the covered run. When they are not roosting they are in the run or in the expanded run. I don't want any extra humidity in the coop. The food is protected from critters. It works for me. The feeder hangs from the rafters. The water is sitting on a cinder block. Pictures in my coop article.

I have hanging feeders. I can raise, lower and remove for cleaning, or storing if coop wasn't rodent proof.
Several chickens can eat at the same time. 20190714_134712_resized.jpg . GC

I have a wall mounted feeder in my juvenile coop/run setup. It is an old section of rain gutter that i repurposed. Its covered by a smsll section of roof to keep it dry. I would imagine that it is prone to rodents, but I have never seen one or sign of any.

My free range adults have a supplemental feeder in their coop. It is just a gravity fed feeder meant for cats and holds about 10lbs. I have an elevated coop and have never had a rodent issue.

We live in the mountains and are surrounded by fields and forest. There is no shortage of predators, scavengers, and theives that would love the free meal but none have been successful.

I was actually thinking about using some gutter! Do they go in it and end up making a mess, or pooping in it? I’d love to see a picture if you could!

I made feeders for both adults and chicks.
For chicks I love what I currently now use. No waste chick feeder. Easy to make and it works.
Do a search for “ No waste Chick feeder” on BYC and you should be able to find it.
It is working great.

Its dark here now, but i can get a pic tomorrow for you. I keep by birds in the coop/run from 8-16wks. In the beginning, they walk on it a little but they quickly get too big. No problems with them pooping in it.

For my hens I made my own free standing feeder that holds just over 50# of feed. I stacked 2 - 5 gallon buckets and secured them together with the bottom bucket facing up and the top bucket upside down on top. I cut the bottom (now top) out of the upper bucket to be able to fill with feed
. I made a plywood box about 1 1/2" bigger than the base of the bucket with a 3" lip the whole way around. This allows enough space for them to get their beaks in but not quite enough to get their feet in. I have almost zero waste doing this.
