Hanging feeders

Why do some hang feeders? Does it cut down on waste?

Our feeder has a bale at the top for hanging. We screwed a large hook into a rafter in the ceiling of the coop to hang it from.
It is hanging so that the base is at the height of my smallest hen's back, so they have to reach up just a little to eat from it.
Cuts down on waste since they can't scratch around in it.
It also frees up valuable space in the coop.

You can make them pretty easy. Here is one that I made and has been going strong for over 2 yeras now.
