(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Brand new to chickens but I've had chicken envy for a looong time!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I started my first flock of 8 chicks in June 2023.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have 2 Welsummers, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 4 Easter Eggers

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I didn't expect I'd fall in love with my chicken girlies, but I absolutely adore them. I love watching them, seeing the different personalities, learning how they move through the world. They are endlessly fascinating to me. Thought I invented Chicken Happy Hour this summer with the husbando, but I have since learned it's A Thing. Eggs are nice too, but so far only one of my girls is laying.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening. Reading. Writing. Riding. I'm interested in just about everything.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live in the Keweenaw Peninsula on a big ol' farm. We've been here a year now. I'm an occasionally competent homesteader. Past life as a cultural resource management professional. I write fiction and have a small business as a developmental editor and story coach. Two daughters, a dog, and a mean little cat.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

This is an awesome community. I've known about it for years (googling around the internet) and have used it a LOT since getting my chickies. Figured it was about time to join.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you decided to join us. Nice variety of breeds you keep, makes for a colorful chicken yard for sure! Your birds should start laying well in the spring, the short days of winter will slow the egg production way down.

Welcome to our community!
