Happy Go Clucky!

Hi all. My name is Mike. My wife and I live in northeastern Tennessee. Please see my answers to the questions below for a bit more info about us. :)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Yes. We are new to chickens. We are currently building a big coop. Upon completion, we plan on getting five chickens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We don't have any at the moment since we are still in the construction stage with our coop. It should be done in a few days.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We don't have any yet, but we will be getting Minorcas and Leghorns, and possibly some others as well. We need to learn more about breed behavior because we don't know if certain breeds are prone to fight with others and such.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Too soon to tell, but one thing we will definitely enjoy is fresh eggs!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Woodworking, motorcycle riding, reading, hiking, chess.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm married. We have five adult children, three-and-a-half grandchildren, two cats, and my 93-year old dad lives with us. We are all retired.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

My wife told me about it. She does a lot of research about raising chickens and said I should also join the group.

I look forward to learning a lot more about having chickens! This seems like a great place to do just that!! Perhaps we'll even find others nearby who are seasoned veterans that can provide guidance for this area as well!

Warm regards,

Mike
Welcome to BYC!!

Hi all. Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you all. I've been building the coop in between rain drops here as our weather has been crazy. Yesterday, my wife and I put in six 4x4 beams in preparation for the run. That was back-breaking since I dug all the holes manually. No power auger here. I think I'll be able to finish it over the next week, but I am leaving town for a week next Saturday, so it may be delayed again if the weather doesn't cooperate next week. One day at a time.

Here are a few photos of the coop. It's not pretty, but it will be functional.
