The following day, Skyler really worked Starfire hard, only being a week and two days before her competition. She cantered him through the course, the spunky Rocky Mountain Horse clearing combinations and oxers alike. Then she cantered him on a trail, returning for a break. During that break, she lunged her new horse in the paddock.
After lunging Little Mitzy, she brought out Annekin, the rowdiest and unruly of her horses. She hooked him to a lunging rope and begun at a slow trot. Annekin tossed his head and chomped on the bit while trotting. Skyler cracked the whip, even though it was angled at the ground, Annekin halted and reared, roaring. Skyler knew how to overpower the young gelding, so she walked right up to him and grabbed on the lunging rope below his halter, janking it down. "Annekin, you quit that right now!!!" She hissed, a terrifying rasp to her voice that wasn't normal, a voice she had only used when overpowering Annekin. Annekin raised his head, then turned sideways from her trying to offset her. "Annekin quit it!!!" She hissed again, and Annekin tried to offset her again but then thought better of it. She walked back to the center and cantered Annekin successfully.

Jessica loped back towards Skyler, dragging one of the dogs behind her. "This one won't leave." She snarled, but the poor dog was tugging back on the rope in fright. "I don't think she'll do anything now that her leader ran off. What do you think?"
