Hello all, I'm so happy to join this group. I had chickens several times in the past but not for the last 15 years and when we moved from Colorado to a lovely place in Kentucky outside the city limits, I was excited to get them again. I have 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Rhode Island Blues (which I had never heard of but apparently are a cross between a Red and an Australorp) The Reds are named after the Andrews Sisters and the Blues are named after my niece and her daughters. They live in New Zealand and are telling all their friends about chickens in the US named for them!
We just moved the girls into their new coop and pen which we made as predator proof as we possibly could. We put a motion sensitive light out there and it has been turned on a few times and my dog has been out sniffing all around the area the next day so I know the predators are checking to see how they can get at those tasty treats, my chickens. I plan to free range them only when I'm out with them and not for several months. They are only about 8 weeks old and still peeping and sleeping in a huddle at night instead of roosting.
I love watching them. They come when I call them and the Reds are especially tame, letting me pick them up with no problem.
