Hello, I have been reading BC for quite a while and finally built the coop and ready for the chickens thanks to all the great articles on BC. it has been fun. Thanks to anyone that can give me advice where to buy some RIRs .

Well, can't wait to get started. Here is a picture of the 4 x 8 coop, hope it will be ok for about 10 free range chickens...

That's a lovely coop! You should be able to find some RIR for sale in the Buy ~ Sell ~ Trade section. Also try the Chicken Breeders & Hatcheries section for breeders. Enjoy the site and good luck with your new venture!

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! Beautiful coop you've made. If you are looking for shipped chicks, besides BYC, I think Ideal still ships some breeds in the winter.

rule of thumb is 4 sq.feet per bird in the coop and 10 sq.feet per bird in the run. Bantams can get by with somewhat less room. If you live in an area with severe winters, you might need a larger coop. When chickens are penned inside for any length of time and too crowded they start attacking their neighbors.. sometimes with dire results.

Hi and :welcome

Your coop will be fine if your birds are free to roam those woods behind it! We free range our chickens and have a somewhat similar sized coop for the birds to sleep in.

Thanks for the welcome and good advice. The chickens have a few acres of woods and open land to roam so they should be happy. The run is small but they shouldn't spend too much time there.

Anyone near High Springs Fl have chickens to sell? Would like RIRs. about to lay if possible. There is Sat night auctions here of about everything in farm animals so may take a look.
