Happy to be back, looking forward to starting a new flock

I started with 6 chicks in January of 2020 in a suburban neighborhood that didn’t allow chickens, perfect timing with COVID locking us all down. We live on a bayou so we only have neighbors on either side. Before getting my girls I cleared it with them. As I think we all do, we learn what works and what we need to change. While I cleaned the coop every morning and changed the shavings in the run every Saturday they got noisy sometimes and the dog on the other side of the fence started digging. We dug a trench and lined it with hardy plank and covered the fence with thick black plastic so the dog couldn’t get through or see the chickens. It worked but it sealed off airflow. We live in Houston…it gets hot here. Long story short after 2 years, it simply wasn’t the best set up for my hens, the space was ultimately too small, goy hot and was prone to holding water. Finally the neighbor’s dog got a mystery illness and they were terrified it could be salmonella….it wasn’t but I knew my neighbor would never feel her dog was safe. Fortunately I was able to find a fantastic place for them to live. I didn’t want them to become stew. I will be starting completely over early next year when we move to the country on 3 acres in East Texas. I came straight back here which was my favorite resource!
Wonderful to have you back
