Hi everyone! I am new here, and pretty much entirely new to chickens! We had a flock for a while when I was growing up, and I loved them and loved spending time with them, but besides treats/food/the occasional muck out, my dad took on most of their care. The eight baby chicks I picked up about two weeks ago are the first that I am solely responsible for, and I want to give them nothing but the best!!!

I have three Barred Rocks, three Black Sex Links, and 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes. They should be all hens, but I know that's only 90% certain... I wouldn't mind a rooster, anyway! I am really enjoying the chicks so far, I did a lot of research leading up to it, but is so much more to learn! I have been on this forum almost every night for weeks, reading the posts and articles, so I figured it was about time I signed up and said hello!

Any tips for a newcomer, to either this forum or to chickens in general, are greatly appreciated! Happy to be here, and happy to begin what I can only assume will be a lifelong obsession with chicken rearing!!

Like you, I grew up with Dad taking care of the chickens with none of the real responsibility on my shoulders. My advice -- aside from joining this group, which you were smart to do -- is to read EVERYTHING you can, and realize that there is very often more than one right way to do things (except to know that chicken wire keeps chickens in but doesn't keep predators out) and to know ahead of time that you will make mistakes, no matter how hard you try to do things right.

Best wishes with your new obsession, and welcome to BYC!!
