Hard, black growth - what is it?

How is she today? Where you able to make any headway on this mass? If you are able to clean it up, and you get down close to the skin, make sure to dig out any ingrown feathers, if this is the cause of this infection. Ingrown feathers are quite common and do cause infection. Most likely any feather stalks have turned to mush at this point. But you definitely want to make sure to remove any attached stems at the folicle.
 
Sadly we had to euthanize her. She stopped eating, drinking and could barely stand or walk. We decided not to mess with the growth, so I still don't know what it was.
