hard eggs shells when chicks tried hatching

I lost all my baby chicks except 3 out of 36. Some drowned some were covered in a slime and some just died the shells were extremely hard what does that mean. I am hatching some quail and don't want to make the same mistake.

Sounds like humidity problem.
