We just bought some new chickens and one has a hard knot on its leg.
My wife is concerned it might be a cancer.
We have 4 new chickens and are keeping them separate from our others to be safe, one of them laid the first day after moving and we are wondering about eating those eggs.

Pic attached, though the pic doesn't really give the bump justice.

Any ideas about what this is? Would you eat the eggs? We can't really easily separate this one since I had to electrify an old pen just to keep these new ones safe.

Hi @jmillersan :frow Welcome To BYC

Any way you can get some photos of the hen, her standing and give us a couple of shots of the front of the legs and bottom of the feet? Load us up, we love photos here:)

It's good that you are keeping new chickens separated - try to keep them as far away from the others as possible and practice bio-security if you can. So you can observe them for any illness.

To be honest, just from that photo I don't see any discoloration that is concerning. The color is the lump looks to be close to the same color of the rest of the leg. I wonder if she has a fracture or injured at it one point and that's why there is a lump.
Anyway, look forward to your photos.

Thanks for the photos.
To me, the lump looks like it's from injury, probably fractured and healed that way, the color is too even for it to be something like a cancerous tumor.
Bottom of feet look o.k.
Let's see what @Eggcessive thinks.

I would just observe them to make sure they have no symptoms of respiratory illness, check them over for lice/mites.

If it feel hard like bone, it may be a bone callus from a healed fracture. Does it move around when you feel of it?
It doesn't move around - its fairly hard. (sorry, for some reason i didn't see the response...I just check back sooner regardless of notifications!)

thanks - is it normal for the chicken to avoid standing on two legs? She also won't perch - and our perch in the temporary coop is not very narrow (i.e. its not foot related)
