My chickens are laying eggs w/ extremely hard shells. One friend said they have to break them with a hammer. I am feeding layer pellets, but no Ca supp. They free range as much as possible, but it's getting cold here, so greens are not a plentiful. They are about 7 mo old. DH and I were wondering if they could be getting their Ca from the well water. It is very hard. Any ideas?

I have hard shelled eggs as well, but not as hard as to break them with a hammer! I have alot of calcium in my water as well. I just thought that it was a good thing to have eggs with hard shells . I'm interested to see what someone else had to say.

It is good to have hard shells. Friend was joking. Anyway, just wondered if I will need to suppliment at some time, or if the water is enough.
