Hardware cloth across entire coop floor?

My husband thinks we should put hardware cloth across the entire floor to keep predators out. Can silkies walk on hardware cloth? I could put dirt (or sod) down over it. It would be easier than making a trench but I am more worried about the feet.

I guess it depends how deep you're going to bury it? Chickens like to scratch and dig ....

Personally I'm going for an apron around the outside of my run that the grass can grow through - is that not an option for you?

I'd also do a apron.
My entire coop and run has a 18" apron. Critters have tried to breach, none have succeeded.

I house my Spanish trio on wire and they seem fine. They also have a solid wood floor for their coop though to rest their feet
