Whats the downside to have 1/4" over 1/2"?

1/4 inch is what I used, the holes are just smaller. I think it might be more expensive.

I just didn't know if being a smaller gauge if was a lesser fence. So no real downside???

1/4 is not the guage. it's the opening of the hole in the wire.

current price here is $135.00 for 1/2" 48"x100' roll. It went up since I bought it last.

Do you have a Sutherland's where you are located? They have the best prices on their lumber and hardware cloth. We are in Texas, so see if you can log on to Sutherland's and maybe it will be cheaper there.

1/2 would work just as well, and 1/4 might even be a bit overkill.

I'm in the middle of trying to find hardware cloth too. Just called my Southern States

2 x 1 48 inches 100 foot is $184
2 x 4 48 inches 100 foot is $114
