Harford County MD

I just called Planning and Zoning at (410) 638-3103 and was told they do not regulate number or sex of the birds, just that it had to be over 2 acres, and housing structure had to be 50' from any property line.

The only regulations for the county that are published pertain to the Town of Bel Air and Aberdeen. So, I'm wondering if this is the 2 acre requirement they are going by.

The woman who took my call at Harford County Zoning Enforcement 410-638-3101 said that the county rules pertain to any address in the county that is NOT in the towns of Bel Air, Aberdeen, or Havre de Grace. County rules are in the zoning code on the www.harfordcountymd.gov website under "planning and zoning." 2 acre minimum. 50' setback for coop.

A contact at Bel Air Planning is trying to find out if I can get the minutes from any meeting for the Bel Air Planning Commission where the chicken regs were discussed. No 5/7 meeting is listed on their website - meetings were in March, April, and one is scheduled for July. The agendas for those meetings do not mention anything about chickens. My contact thinks chickens were discussed and that no changes were approved.

Any mention of how we can get the 2 acre requirement back on the agenda for the county and what info they might want to see to change the requirement? Do they have specific concerns? Do they want to see how other cities/towns/counties have handled chickens on smaller lots?

I think we may have to start a petition to do so, and submit it to them. Get all HC chicken owners/supporters organized for a group effort. Maybe approach 4H Members/organizers. At the very least it would help.

**P L E A S E** involve me in this. I just got a notice in the mail today. It basically said that one of my neighbors is a complete and total ... OK, I'll admit, I'm very, very upset right now. I probably should not be posting in my current mental state.

Here is the letter:

What can I do? I'm going to try and get through to Barry Glassman's office on Tuesday. He was on a talk radio program I listen to not even a month ago, and I should have called in to ask about this, but at that point, I hadn't been turned in by the scum of the earth. Does anyone know what will happen if I refuse to get rid of my little friends?

Geez. God forbid I'd try to produce some decent, non-hormone/antibiotic injected food for my family.

It is truely heartbreaking when you cant have chickens in the privacy of your own backyard if you want! It makes us criminal . However its perfectly fine in some states to grow POT in their yard!!! What a messed up world we live in!! Im so sorry this happened to you. Its terribly unfair! And utterly ridiculous!
