Harrisburg farm show - poultry show... :(

That is why we don't show at fairs,etc. Only shows that are ABA/APA standard. The birds that come to those shows are brought by true breeders and showman/showwoman. The quality of the stock is so much more. The people who show on that level, have a lot at stake, so the health and care of the birds is tops. Don't let this one farm show keep you away Henry.

I am so sorry to hear about your bird this changed my mind about showing I was considering it but after hearing this now way I am going to stick to breeding.

Yeah... Doesn't seem worth it. I can't believe someone would take a bunch of birds to a show, probably knowing they were sick (how could you not know you have something like that in your flock), and allow other peoples pets to become sick

I thought this show was APA/ABA standarized, and I could care less about about the premium money. I just want to educate youth like me that there is something more than just a plain ole' chicken.​

How many birds did you have at the show?? Can they test the sick birds to make a definite ID of the problem?

Im sorry Hannah. Personally, since birds are dropping left and right, I wouldnt bring any of those birds back home.

We were there on Sunday. Crowded! But I enjoyed looking at all the poultry. Some of the birds were beautiful. The only upsetting thing for me was the display showing the "factory" birds. They had multiple birds crammed into stacked wire cages. The wire floors were slanted so the eggs rolled out onto chutes. The birds looked horrible. It almost brought me to tears. My girls have a nice life compared to these birds!

Quit the Hysteria people! It's a poultry show! whenever over 1500 birds are in one area and in a stressful environment there is bound to be some germs exchanged and some loss. The fact that only a handful of birds were lost is testimony to the hard work that the caretakers and organizers do all of Farm show week. If your birds come in healthy and strong and you take the necessary precautions (antibiotics, vitamins, good husbandry) your birds should be able to overcome whatever it is they might pick up. Understand that you take this chance when you choose to show any animal. If there is any doubt in your mind you need to remove your birds the day you see a problem and forfit your premium money, rather than bad mouth the show and the exhibitors. To speak about disease in a sanctioned show and in todays paranoid environment is endangering my birds as well as the continuation of the poultry section of the farmshow. The birds shown are blood tested and checked as well as possible during coop in. if you have enough experience and husbandry skills you should be confident in helping your birds recover from what you think they might have. Bottom line whenever we take an animal outside of its environment it will get stressed and chance getting sick. If you are not comfortable with this reality, keep your birds at home. do not criticize our poultry shows!
Also to anyone that has a problem with "Factory" Hens. What you saw at farmshow is the way they are housed and kept. If you have a problem with this don't eat eggs or egg products.
I am a vegetarian and a fellow fancier accept the facts.

BrownLeghornLuv: thanks for being the one to step up and say something. This sort of thing happens. My birds were at the show, went healthy, came back healthy. they are currently seperated just like i do when i return from any show. Disease, mites, and an occaional death are realites we need to accept. We are all responsible for our own birds and their health.

Blood testing at the show?? That's a laugh. At all the shows I've been to (in Harrington, DE) no one even asked for health/NPIP papers or checked for legbands! You can't assume anyone's birds have been checked for disease by the show staff, or anyone. Showing is a real risk (not to mention thefts) if you like your birds.
