Hart's Chick Shack

Thanks Andy for the tips on pallet construction!
Duh, I'm going to look closer at that pallet dumpster we have at work...might be the source for a chicken coop AND a 12x20 shed!

Pickle barrels will ALWAYS smell like pickles...but it might be good to get a start on pickled eggs! LOL
Which brings to light another ODD way I think...what if I feed them bar-b-q sauce?
Nah, they'd still taste like chicken but I'd have a mess with all that red chicken poop!!

Yea the blue thing is a plastic screw bin that i found to catch what drop the bird don't, it will hold a little bit of water also for the lazy ones..

Andycowboy
I used only 40 x 48 pallets stood on end, I put a piece of board on the bottom end and used a strip of board to join the top and bottom pallet where they meet. I leveled as much as i could in sections, I also used the framing in the center to try to get all level. Then I put a plate across the tops with a couple of shims to keep all level and secure.. Ladder and other roost from same materials and as others have said on BYC they all go to the top. Before I put the ladder up above the meatie cage they were all roosting on it, Just added that Pic. The Buckets I put two Keyhole slots in the bottom of the bucket to hang them on screws with fat heads, make them easy to remove and clean, and drilled 1/4" holes in the side or bottom laying down for small particles to filter out.

Pallets on the ground would be difficult, I am trying to keep all elevated to keep it dry and hopefully free from rot.. I used treated 2x6 for the floor joist and frames, 1" cypress for the floor boards and covered them with some fiberglass fire resistant panels (FRP). Really easy to keep clean the the sand will not run through the cracks.

The waterer is a 55 gallon drum that had a safe product in it for consumption, you do need to watch that. I bought a bulkhead or tank fitting from TSC and put it in, drilled a hole and used a stick that I shaped up to get it through the hole and hold it steady while i screwed the outside on with out cutting a hole in the top of the barrel.. Then used fittings to attach the hose on the barrel side. The Pvc pipe Is 2' long cap on one end and reduced down to fitting for hose on the other end with four nipples. CConly is where i got the nipples through Amazon. I am probably going to add some type of drip cup under each we will see. I will post some more pics. If you have any questions let me know or PM me. I put a funnel with screen in one bung hole and left the other open with a screen to keep the skeeters out.

Fishbone,

I used 2 inch drywall screws on the boards run them in at an angle away from the edge cured most of the splitting, used 3.5 deck screws and long nails on the framing no problems. Did not have to prebore. Ran them all in with a cordless ryobi driver.

I will agree on the barrel you need to know what has been in it.. Mine had some organic liquids that i sell safe for consumption, or get some barrels that hold liquid bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) or foods.

I will some what disagree with the liquid bleach, don't use the scented. I sell liquid bleaches to water, wastewater, restuarant and other places to treat potable water. Some may use solid tabs, but most either use liquid or Chlorine gas to treat municiple drinking water. Just have to mix the correct amounts to a given level.. Unless I am missing something in particular with the chickens.

Lonnie,

I see you are in TN also if you are on the west end around Somerville, and have problems finding a good drum let me know.

The best way to separate the pallets was with a sawzall and just cut the nails. Second best was putting a block under the board and drop something heavy on the runners. Some nails have great glue on them and you will split alot of board ends.

Great Questions All if you have more or need more details just ask. I have a few more pics i will post later, gotta go back to shucking corn.

Tripod in the run is a deer corn feeder for scratch, I had to make the hole smaller used a piece of plastic bucket top and bored it out to just let the rod fit thru the hole. We will see just did that on Saturday along with the Auto Coop door.

Oh and the cage I put in to hold the Cornish x rocks that I had, the others were picking feathers to the point of bloody holes. So had to seaperate them out, from the rest and I also have used it for a brooder.

They have worked well for our girls.. Cool thing today since they are hung on two screw in the back using keyhole slots, I had my broody hen with 4 new chicks I just Lifted the bucket off and moved her bucket and all into a separate pen..
