Harvesting cabbage?

Question about my SFG....

I have cabbage planted in one square that is doing just fantastic....maybe too much so as it is starting to spill over into the neighboring crops.

Can I harvest the outter leaves or will that prevent the head from forming? This is my first foray into having a non container based veggie garden and I LOVE it so far but I'm not sure what to do with my mutant cabbage, ha!

I don't have cabbage but I do have spinach if it work similar you should be able to.

Cabbage is different than spinach picking the outer leaves kills the plant. I have some cabbage growing in my garden.
