Hi,
We have 25 Braggs Mountain poultry. We wanted primarily hens but received only 13 hens and 11 roosters. The roosters fight quite frequently as do the hens amongst themselves. They are pastured chickens and additionally raised on our organic veggies and fruit. We've had chickens for 27 years and never seen such a bunch of fighters. We received the 25 in May 2012 after waiting 2 years for them, sending in $135 2 years ago. The roosters are about 6 lbs now and some of the hens 4 1/2 lbs. Some of the roosters have quite large chests, much like a turkey. Their weight is such that when they run, they are tippy and very clumsy.
In the past, we have raised Barred Rocks, Aracauna, Astralthorpes, and silver and gold lace chickens mainly. These birds were gentle, talked soothingly to one another, and got along well--unlike the Braggs Mountain poultry.
Currently we have segregated the Braggs Mountain flock from our other flock. Both are pastured in different places. The other flock has 2 roosters which manage the hens nicely, calling them back when they stray too far or when they sense danger--and the hens obey. This does not happen with the Braggs Mountain poultry.
Currently the Braggs Mountain hens are not laying yet. The hens are 5 mos old. The flock is healthy but voracious eaters compared to our other flock.
