Has anyone ever heard of using an AC unit in a chicken coop?

I've heard of heated coops, but I live in Key West, Fl, and I was thinking about sound proofing my coop, although in the summer that would most definitely fry my chickens. I was having trouble with some neighbors a few months ago, so my rooster has been staying at the wildlife center where I volunteer since August. The evil people have finally moved out, and I would love to bring my roo home, but I would still like to try to keep him silent, at least at night. I love my boy, and his crow, but others don't seem to feel the same. So, has anyone ever heard of a tiny AC unit that can be used in a coop. The dimensions of my coop are 3'x4'x5'. It wouldn't have to keep it freezing, just cool enough to where my chicks would be comfortable, and not baking in their house. I really want to get Diego back as soon as possible, but until I figure some things out, I'm afraid he'll have to stay at the wildlife center. Thanks in advance to any creative answers I may receive!

I would have to agree. The constant on and off of cool air and the fan blowing would be a problem. I would not insulate a chicken coop.

I use fans in the nursery (a 16 x 10 port. ) and have up to 4 of them. One in the rafter, one for each window and one for the big bodied birds (if I have them) on the floor next to thier part of the nursery.

The other fans do not blow on the chickens. I have three sections. The babies, the 4 to 8 week olds and the big bodies. I usualy only use the two. The big bodied chickens will harm the others becuase the can smother them.

The place doubles as a workshop and storage place. I have gotten pretty elaborate with this. A timer runs heat lamps in the spring and fall. The timer is then used for the fans in the summer.

I have a photo electric dawn to dusk switch for an oil/electric heater in the winter. The heat lamps in each section are on all the time in the winter. In the winter months; The coop is sectioned out with hanging heavy moving blankets to keep the heat in for that section (10x8).

I do this in case I do not get home in time. It can get pretty hot or cold in there. The birds seem to really like it. It is easy to clean and all the supplies I need for them are housed there.

A/C is not a good idea in my opinion, I live in a state where the DEVIL lives and makes the weather, Oklahoma. I use a small box fan set on low during the 110 degree summer days, and I turn it off after egg collection at 5:00 pm. it seems to just take the edge off of the heat, and the birds like it. But A/C is a little over the top and could be harmful if your birds come and go as they please from coop to run, hot /cold often.

As long as you have vents at the highest points and some on both sides for flow though, just use a fan. I also strung up a tarp about a foot off the top of my short little coop so the sun hit that and didn't directly heat the coop. AC would probably just make them sick...

I don't see a problem if you direct the airflow across the ceiling so it is not blowing directly on the birds. Keep the thermostat high (90°+) so there is no big "shock" when they come in from outside.

Looking at the dimensions of your coop an A/C would be a bit of overkill. In that small of a space you would have to defuse the air coming out of the A/C a lot.

You won't need to fully sound proof the coop to reach your objective. If you reduced the noise by 70% you should be good.

Rethink your sound needs with the 70% in mind and you should be able to cool the coop with a couple of vents and an exhaust fan.

I have two fans in my coop on each end. I run one pushing air in and the other pushing the air out. Just a thought.

A small camper AC unit would work hooked to a thermostat but I would just sink an old car radiator in the ground an duct air threw it from the coop. That would cool a small coop pretty well.

i have a small fan that i hang from the ceiling..it circulates the air just enough for them.
