Even 6 inches makes a big temperature difference. I would shoot for 2 feet here(hard pan) but if the water table was shallow I would go just below the water line. Its more or less dig a little, feel the ground, dig some more.

About 25 years ago, I was remodeling a house for Aunt Martha who had four chickens she was fond of. She asked for a place for her chickens, so I told her that the next day we would build a coop.

The next morning she handed me a set of plans that included heat and air conditioning. The cost then was about $ 20,000.00, but would be much greater at today's prices.

I had the same problem with neighbors complaining about my roo crowing at night. A guy who keeps roosters said to pull the roo out of the coup just before bedtime, and put him in a small animal carrier with some hay, and dinner treats. Place it off the floor or on a shelf in the garage or a bathroom (that doesn't share a wall with neighbors). In the morning take the roo back to the hen coup. i've been doing this routine for over 8 months and my roo is very used to it and loves the dinner treats. My neighbors say they can rarely hear him at all or think it is coming from someone else's house. Keep lights 100% off in the garage, or bathroom, and plug in a small radio at low volume if he still crows. The radio will drown out any noises he might want to crow about at night. My coop is insulated and it still has been getting 110 in Texas inside my coop under a shade tree with two fans. One sucking hot air out and one blowing air in. My chickens are struggling and miserable. I have had to bring then inside to cool them, stand them in water, etc. One hen got where she couldn’t walk until i cooled her off. I installed a mini split AC/heat unit in there. I no longer worry, my chickens are happy and i keep it about 75-85. Chicken do well in 85 degrees. All my hens are laying, i keep my coop clean and we are all happy.

This is why this topic is so confusing for EVERYONE. Unless you have the same size coop (mine is a full size shed 10x12) then no advise is helpful. My coop with 3 fans and plenty of ventilation would NOT cool down, and one of my ladies almost died. So unless you actually add your dimensions and your actual air temperature for say a week straight what good is saying I do this and I do that, and you're wrong, no you're wrong..... blah blah blah.

I have a 10x12 non insulated shed. Has damper ventilation and 2 added vents on each side of the coop. I had 7 days of 95+degree temps with 90+ humidity. Lows at night were 80+. How other than a AC could I get my temps down? 3 fans on the birds was doing nothing but blowing hot air on them.

I added a exhaust fan and an intake fan ...... brought the air down 3 degrees.... SO now is it a good line of thinking to bring in an AC for the worst days?

You have a point, coop size is a major part of the process, also climate. What's your climate?
Can you get pictures of your coop? What are your county laws for out building electricity?
