So I just had to put a 3 week old crested duck down a few days ago because after going to seeing an avian specialist vet and trying 4 different medications (1 being injectable) he was not getting any better unfortunately. We became extremely attached to him as we took him to our house from the farm and kept him there hoping he would get better but he didn't.
So just yesterday I went to our local farm and ranch store and picked up another crested duckling that was at best 1 or 2 days old with the same problem. The person working there said they were going to put him down because he was falling over and was having constant tremors (and would give him to me for free if I would take him) so with tears in my eyes I took him thinking that I would give it a go again and try to save this one. (Thinking maybe because I was trying to save him right from being hatched it might work?)
(The first duck with this problem took about a week or two to show the same symptoms)
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever seen a new duckling with tremors/ falling over that got better and recovered? And if so, what did they give him to help get them better?
I am completely aware that this is most likely a neurological issue (as it was with our last late duck) but I am still going to try for a few days to save him. I am giving him 250mg of niacin orally mashed up with a bit of banana as I read somewhere that it could be a possible niacin deficiency?
If any one has any other ideas or has heard of anything similar I would love any input. I will have him put down if he doesn't seem to be improving in a few days but I really just wanted to give him a chance.
Thanks
