Has anyone experience with housesitters?

We used to have friends that live with their parents in the middle of nowhere, and loved to stay in our house in the city when we were on vacation in exchange for taking care of the garden en animals.
But now they all have their own families and/or other activities.

We are going on vacation for 3 weeks this year again. And are thinking about looking for strangers to stay in our house for free and take care of the garden/animals. Especially for the cat; it is a really needy affectioned breed and will become depressed if she only sees a person once a day for three weeks.

Has anyone experience with this? What to look out for? Tips?

I haven't gone anywhere since 1984 I traveled with my sister(and family) while my parents house sat (we lived together)

I don't think I would ever feel comfortable with strangers living in my home.
