Has anyone had a roo castrated?

Is this even recommended? I'm having a hard time trying find a home for my 14 wk old (surprise) boy. If my options run out, could I have this done to him?

Culling is out of the question. He's a gorgeous white plymouth rock and he's a big baby. Not mean at all.

If anyone has had this done, what is the success rate? I'm at my wits end here!

Local 4-H won't take him, haven't heard back from humane society....I'm looking up farms in my area now, craiglist is my last option, but I thought I'd throw this idea out there....

I haven't done it before but my DH's aunt said they did it to a bunch a cockrels to "fatten" them up for the dinner table. She said it was terrable and they lost over half of them. Can you not keep him like he is since he's nice?

Try a rooster box and being really nice to the neighbours (free eggs kinda nice)

And if you dont know, Rooster boxes are small and dark. They're supposed to make him not wanna crow, because its dark and he thinks its nighttime, and theres no big scary predators. And its supposed to make him unable to because he can't stretch out his neck properly. Just make sure they'res plenty of airflow. You can let him out around 9ish when the neighbours wont mind so much.

I'm not sure if they work though.. Some people say they're fantastic and the best thing ever, others say they're useless. I say my parents wont let me have a roo

I haven't had a capon in years. My dad used to have a little "kit" that he used on all of my Grandmother's roosters. It seemed, at the time, to be a fairly simple procedure. They didn't even put them under as I remember. Maybe they do now. You would have to find an avian vet in your area. But, even then...odds are that he hasn't done very many of these operations. I don't think it's going to stop his crowing...it may change his voice a bit...

! But I think that's about all. I've never heard of a rooster box unti now. I don't know if they work. My boys still crow while they are in their little dark coop...it is muffled somewhat...but, the minute they are out in the run and in daylight. They just crow away to their little hearts content!

I can tell this is hard on you. Bummer!
